Here is a good general IT checklist when you're setting up an office.
- Check with building management that the building can support your Internet and telecommunication requirements.
- Arrange with telecommunications providers for telephone lines and numbers.
- Arrange a good-quality printing company for reprinting stationery with updated information.
- Liaise with HQ IT Department, and ensure they are kept up to date with all aspects of the plan, and that global IT standards are accommodated in your plans.
- Install cabling for phones, PCs, servers and communications devices.
- Arrange for PCs with localized settings and peripherals, i.e. Japanese keyboards, printers, etc. that can run a software image that global HQ provides.
- Test all systems comprehensively.
- Install and certify high-speed Internet line for email and Web traffic (e.g. 100 Mb BFLETS Internet connection).
- Arrange Internet Service Provider suitable for Internet requirements: email server, Web server, FTP server, etc.
- Negotiate, purchase, and arrange for delivery of servers, communications products, PCs, printers, photocopiers, software media, and licenses.
- Set-up maintenance support contracts with Japanese vendors for all products.
- Arrange for software updates, and document all license keys and relevant usernames and passwords for all services.
- Install communications cabinet and all communications devices.
- Undertake comprehensive soak test.
- Ensure that client PCs function correctly in the new environment and can connect to the Internet/VPN/server(s).
- Support users during "go-live" period and subsequent days.
- Assist with any local Japan issues that your global IT staff cannot support.
